Wyatt Wilson
We got the chance to talk with Wyatt Wilson, steel guitarist for Josh Ward, and hear more about how he got started playing in the Texas Country Music Scene, his career, and upcoming projects.
When did you learn to play the steel guitar and did you have any specific person or instance that inspired you to get into music?
I learned to play the steel guitar when I was 13 years old. I got into playing music on guitar at 6 because of my grandfather who was a bass player.
When did you know you wanted to play steel for a living?
There was never really a specific time when I knew I wanted to play for a living, I’ve always just kind of planned on being a musician.

Where do you draw your musical inspiration from?
I draw inspiration from all over the place but as far as steel guitar goes, I’d say Roger Ray from The Stragglers is the biggest reason I play steel. Both of my parents are big Jason Boland fans and it passed down to me.
Where are you based out of?
I’m based out of Enid, Oklahoma. About an hour and a half northwest of Oklahoma City.

How long have you been playing with Josh Ward?
I’ve been with Josh Ward just a little under 2 years.

What has you career as a steel guitar player been like with Josh Ward and the band, as well as the Texas Country Music scene as a whole?
My career with Josh has been pretty great so far! Coming from a bar band into a touring act was a bit of weird adjustment, but I’ve been in love with the road since then and have had the opportunities to play some bucket list venues like Gruene Hall and Billy Bob’s.

What does the Texas Country Music scene and community mean to you?
The Texas Country Music scene to me is a pretty tight knit group of hard working and supportive individuals, yet it remains somewhat competitive amongst our peers - friendly, of course.
Do you and the band have any upcoming shows or projects you are particularly looking forward to?
Josh Ward and the rest of our crew will be going to Las Vegas in December for the NFR and I’m very excited to head out there and show off some of the new music Josh has been working on.
